I cut Jonah’s hair today. (He was long overdue.) Afterward I put him in the shower and washed him off. Then I let him play in the water while I checked email in the next room.
Later Naiah, who had already removed all of her clothing, asked if she could join him. And she did.
A few minutes later I heard the shower door crash, and as I came running, both of them screaming.
And they were climbing out of this:
And then the bleeding started, and I couldn’t even find all of the glass on their feet and legs, so I sat them down in the kitchen with tissues on their feet and blankets on their backs and called Jenn, who sent over Jason F. (My Jason was thirty minutes away on a daddy date with Anna and Sarah.)
Jason F. came right over and helped me think clearly enough to get them ready to drive to the E.R. But after looking them over more carefully, Jason (who used to be an EMT, and who, incidentally, thinks maybe every rural church planter would be wise to train as an EMT) found that the bleeding was slowing down, and that there didn’t seem to be any shards under the skin of their feet, where the worst cuts were located.
So we sat them on stools in the kitchen and cleaned them up, applied antibiotic ointment, and bandaged the cuts on their feet, which looked gnarly but closed up well. The kids were both very quiet and patient with it all.
Then my Jason arrived and started clearing away the blood and glass. He quarantined the kids in their room so that they wouldn’t track shards on the carpet. We started a movie for them and gave them Pop Tarts. They’re happy.
I think I’ve had enough adrenaline for a month now. I don’t take crises well when I’m pregnant.
Oh my gosh! I got sick to my stomach just reading this. Thanks for not including the bloody pics! Praise God they weren’t hurt much more than they were, and praise God for close, former-EMT neighbors! I am so glad they are okay. (Well, more okay than not!) How are you holding up now that it’s all over?
I’m still kind of shaky. I get a lot more panicked when I’m pregnant than when I’m not. I keep feeling like there’s something I should be doing right now.
It was a rather exciting evening.
I have often been glad that my husband trained as an EMT, even though he went down a different career path.
I just nearly threw up. Oh my goodness. Here is a hug and some chocolate and a nap and one of those fizzy feet baths. Oh my!
Wow. That’s what I call a close call. I’m so glad they are okay. And here’s a hug to you. *hug*
I’ve always hated those glass shower doors.
One summer in college I was working at Sonic. I had just gone through the door to take someone their order–was standing at their car delivering it when we heard a high-pitched noise and then the door completely shattered. I still don’t know why–but the manager blamed me–even though I was 20 feet away at a car when it happened.
I am so glad that kids aren’t hurt badly and little Kerr 5 has gotten his/her dose of adrenelin for the pregnancy. 🙂 I hope you indulged in a poptart and video with the kids.
I bet your Jason will be demo-ing a metal surround and you will be purchasing a new, PLASTIC shower curtain soon–they’re easier to clean anyway.
Well, the metal surround appears to be part of the construct of the tub (like the one at Grammie and Poppa’s house), but yes, the remaining good door has been removed and a curtain will be going in.
Oh my goodness! I don’t check my Google reader for two days and disaster strikes! Yikes, I’m glad things are okay though….phew!
ugh! How terrifying! I can’t even imagine!!! I’m so glad they weren’t hurt worse than they were! I would have been freaking out big time!! Glad to hear they’re healing well!
After I stepped on glass, I got planter’s warts. Apparently this is a common thing to happen. The warts come in through the wound and make themselves at home. If your kids complain of ongoing pain, this may be the problem. Sorry for the bad news!
Love,
Heather Travis
