I crashed a moving truck into a house today. Because that’s the kind of brilliant I am.
But no worries. I’m fine.
Ella is fine.
The truck is fine.
The house, sadly, is broken.
“Just how do you crash a moving truck into a house?” you might ask.
Well, I’ll tell you.
You buckle the baby into the truck with you– the truck which, by the way, you really shouldn’t drive because your name appears nowhere on the rental agreement.
You read all the little warnings and instructions on the stickers in the cab, so as not to harm the truck you shouldn’t be driving.
You check that the lights are on; windshield wipers are on.
You set off down the road, slowly, in heavy rain.
One block from the house, you think, Okay, I need to stay back from the carport so I don’t run into it. And as you approach the driveway, you think, okay I’ll just nose the cab under the carport a little so the baby and I don’t get wet, but I’ve got to stay back so I don’t run into the roof. Then as you turn into the driveway you bump over a pile of snow and think, Oh, I hope that didn’t hurt anyth– CRASH! And for a split second you wonder what that sound was, and then your foot remembers to brake, and you think, Um, did I just hit the house? Then you get out of the truck and stand in the pouring rain looking up at the broken siding and ceiling and the gaping black hole in what was once a cheerful, unbroken, butter yellow carport.
And then you take your baby inside the house. And laugh. And bid farewell to your cleaning deposit.
That’s how.

I am glad you and baby are okay.
It must be crash month. I also crashed my car – about a week ago. First time ever it was my fault. It was my fault. Totally. I have no excuse – the only “explanation” I have is was Not Paying Attention. Classic fender bender. And there goes a $500 deductible, woosh, and poof, and bye-bye.
I should blog about it. Lately, I’m writing more in your comments than on my own blog. !
Oh, I’m sorry. I’m glad you guys are okay. Will they try to make you pay above your deposit for repairs? That was a nice carport.
Oh, that is a big bummer, but I’m impressed with your ability to laugh about it!
Becky, only you could blog and joke about that. That is awesome. I am very glad that everyone is okay, and absolutely impressed at your reaction. Hope it’s a better day!
Sounds like your accident was caused by the snow! This might more involved than just the deposit on the house. Was the truck damaged?
Did you have to purchase insurance (liability &/or collision) for the truck? The damage to the house would be involved with the vehicle insurance.
Also, check your auto insurance policy! See if it might cover the accident.
Since it’s CA insurance, this Texas gal can’t say without seeing the policies involved. I don’t need these answers but you need to have them.
Also report it promptly to the insurance involved.
P.S. Liability would cover the house damage while collision would cover the truck.
God Bless! I’m thankful no one was hurt.
LOL!!!

Oh. . .honey. . .oh. I am so sorry. And so glad that you are okay. . .and the laughter probably did you worlds of good–but not the carport.
So. . .call me a rubber-necker (from 2,000) miles away. . .but I was kind of hoping for a photo of the carnage.
Hoping that you are still laughing? I gouged a couple of holes in my new vinyl floor last night while moving couches that I KNEW Tony didn’t want me to move by myself for fear that I would gouge holes in the vinyl floor.
I did not learn from your lesson.
I’m afraid to document it with an actual photograph, because deep down I still feel like at any moment someone is going to jump out and yell at me.
And Pearl, Jason said that he never gets the insurance on those things. You would think being the son of a TX Insurance Department employee. . . But no. We’re living on the edge!
But it’s not going to cost too much anyway. Our former neighbor the handyman will do it himself for a couple hundred. I just wish it were all done with already!
