How it Shifts

Tonight I posted a little update on Facebook that read, “Rebecca is ready for an Ella now. The wait is getting tedious.” I said it without much thought this afternoon. But tonight it struck me how odd it was to word it that way, that I was waiting for “an Ella.”
I certainly wouldn’t have put [...]

Everybody Does It

Naiah (age 3, writing in my notebook): I’m going to make an ‘A’, Mommy. See? Up, down, across.
Me: That’s a very good ‘A’.
Naiah: Yes. And I’m going to make an ‘M’ now. See? Up, down, up, down.
Me: Very good!
Naiah (scribbling a dark spot under the ‘M’): And this is the M’s poop.

So Much for Feminism

Confession: I’ve been paying Anna and Sarah quarters for folding and putting away the laundry.
It’s been wonderful. In fact, it may just be the best idea I’ve ever had. And they’re learning money management skills, too!
Tonight the girls were in the living room, folding the latest load of laundry. Naiah decided to join the fun. [...]

Mmmm. . . Fiction

I finally made some headway in The Story of Edgar Sawtelle last night. Theater for Kids

This was the second year that the girls participated in the community theater program. It’s not really a play or anything scripted, just a long string of music and magic acts. But it’s enough to satisfy the twins’ desire to play to a real audience.
A few things I should note about the video:
1. Anna is [...]

Visitor

What makes a grassy swoosh, swoosh, swoosh, chomp, chomp, chomp sound at 2 in the morning, not two feet from my open bedroom window?
Oh, just this:

It’s a cow. A big, fat, cow, on our tiny patch of front-yard lawn. You’ll have to take my word for it. It was dark, and my husband was kind [...]

Ask a Pregnant Lady.

Yesterday a blond, middle-aged woman pulled me aside in the baby department at Target. “You’re pregnant,” she said.
“Yes,” I said. Duh.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Sure.”
She held up two bedding sets, a green one with lions, and a blue one with giraffes. “Now if you knew for sure, 100%, that you were having a boy, which [...]
